The Empordà sits behind the Costa Brava, between the Pyrenees and the coast. Peratallada, Pals, Monells and Madremanya are medieval villages where the streets, the walls and the houses are all the same warm stone, and the wedding venues are restored masias and village estates rather than hotels.

Girona itself is thirty minutes away: a cathedral staircase, a river lined with coloured houses, and an airport with cheap flights from across Europe.

Why it works for a long wedding

• Estates that sleep everyone. Many masias come with twenty or thirty beds, so the wedding party wakes up where it danced.
• Nobody to disturb. Out among the fields, the music can run late in a way it never can in town.
• Three days, not one. The region invites a welcome dinner, the wedding, and a long lunch the next day. We plan all three as one event.
• Two airports. Girona for European budget flights, Barcelona for everything intercontinental.

What to watch for

These are working farmhouses in the countryside, which means gravel, uneven ground and limited power. High heels, wheelchairs and a DJ rig all need thinking about in advance, and the generator is often a real line in the budget. We walk every venue before you sign and tell you what it will actually need.

August is hot inland — considerably hotter than the coast — so a ceremony before seven in the evening needs shade that already exists.

Catering in a farmhouse
